Blackpool Central: A world-class leisure destination

Blackpool Central is a new world-class leisure destination which will see £300m invested and 1000 new jobs created. One of the UK’s most important regeneration projects, which secured £40m of levelling up funding. We handled all aspects of comms and engagement around the single-biggest investment in Blackpool for more than a century. We managed a successful pre-application consultation which saw over 90% of people in favour of the plans and resulted in a unanimous approval at committee. Our campaign also scooped us Silver in the CIPR awards in 2022.

A conversation on Your Prestwich

The £100m redevelopment of Prestwich town centre as part of a joint venture between Bury Council and Muse Developments has been one of the most anticipated regeneration projects in Greater Manchester. A high-profile site with multiple stakeholders, we designed a multi-stage communications and consultation plan which saw over 1200 responses from local people. A grass roots campaign, the strategy made effective use of social media channels to reach a wide audience, alongside the organisation of several consultation events and workshops, including with local schools, and attendance at community events. We also secured Prestwich as one of the Sunday Times best places to live in the UK in 2022 and 2024.

Establishing a standout homebuilder brand

We were challenged to help build the brand for Northstone, a relatively new homebuilder bringing forward its first high quality communities. Our twin-pronged approach helped raise their corporate profile, as well as showcase their stunning new homes to would-be residents. From launches of new homes and sites, a raft of successful award entries and engaging online blog content, to coverage in target local, regional, national and trade media titles, our coherent strategy helped put Northstone on the map and worked seamlessly alongside their wider marketing strategy.

Building a buzz for the historic jewel in Stockport’s crown

For over 200 years, Weir Mill has sat unloved below Stockport’s famous viaduct arches. Our challenge was to build a buzz for its next chapter and consult the community on Capital&Centric’s restoration vision. Our creative campaign secured extensive media coverage in local, consumer and trade titles, and featured packed-out engagement events on site. We’ve continued to build excitement ever since, ensuring joined up messaging with the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation; marking key construction milestones with media features; and even getting the town the regional top spot in the Sunday Times’ Best Places to Live.

Lights, camera, action: A TV and film destination for Liverpool

Plans are afoot to unlock creative opportunities for generations to come by repurposing the art deco former Littlewoods building into a TV and film destination. We’ve been working with Capital&Centric to get across their vision for a transformational development to the masses – whether securing global media coverage or consulting the surrounding communities on the detail at family-friendly events and po-ups. We’ve followed the highs and lows of the plans, providing crisis comms support during a devastating fire and profiling resurrection as work began on site.

Establishing Manchester’s most exciting new neighbourhood

Kampus is now firmly established as one of Manchester’s coolest destination neighbourhoods – and we’re proud to have played our part. We supported Capital&Centric and HBD throughout construction to ramp up excitement for what was to come, with media coverage, visits, pop-up events and staggered occupier announcements helping set the tone. This underpinned the wider marketing strategy to attract people to live there. Our attention then turned to building a reputation for the incredible collection of indie operators based there, with comms support for a buzzing year-round run of events and activations.

Commercial & Industrial

A strategic energy and resource hub

We manage all the PR and stakeholder engagement for Protos, Peel NRE’s strategic energy and resource hub near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. We have helped to raise the profile of the destination to potential occupiers as well as supporting Peel NRE with various planning applications coming forward on the site. We manage all media relations and social media channels for Protos including press releases, drafting blogs and thought leadership pieces, and we manage relationships with the local community and stakeholders.

An award winning campaign for Cheshire retirement community

We supported Retirement Villages Group in securing planning approval for a new-build retirement community situated in Chester’s Green Belt. Another developer had previously had their plans refused by the council following local opposition, but our co-ordinated community, stakeholder and political engagement programme built solid support with no objections and the plans were approved. Our creative approach – made all the harder as the consultation took place during lockdown - scooped us Gold in the CIPR Pride awards. We continue to support RVG with PR and ongoing community engagement during construction.

Energy & Infrastructure

Cementing the North West as the home of hydrogen

The North West Hydrogen Alliance is a regional trade body that brings together some of the UK’s most influential organisations looking to cement the North West as the home of hydrogen. We deliver the full suite of communications services including media relations, public affairs, social media and event management. We also provide a secretariat function, managing all member relations and organising member meetings and events. We organise Hydrogen Week UK on behalf of the Alliance – an annual national awareness campaign that brings together stakeholders from across the UK to celebrate and promote the role of hydrogen in reaching net zero.

Delivering the UK's first Hydrogen Week

We launched the UK’s first ever Hydrogen Week – a week-long national awareness-raising campaign to celebrate and promote the role of hydrogen in reaching net zero – for our longstanding client the North West Hydrogen Alliance. The event launched in 2023 and saw over 6000 people take part across the nation. Each year we secure a number of high profile sponsors alongside extensive media coverage and social engagement. In the North West, we organised the ‘Delivering The Hydrogen Economy’ showcase event, with a keynote address from Mayor Steve Rotheram and which featured on ITV.

An industry led cluster to drive net zero investment

Net Zero North West is the industry led cluster which is driving and supporting industrial decarbonisation in the North West. We developed a communication strategy which has positioned the North West as the pre-eminent cluster in the UK, securing extensive media coverage including broadcast. Through our activity we significantly raised the profile of the North West with key decision makers and influencers within Government and helped the region secure backing as one of the first two carbon capture clusters in the UK.

Consulting on nationally significant energy infrastructure

Few people think about the UK’s resilience to cope with peaks and troughs in energy demand! When INEOS brought forward nationally significant plans to deliver underground gas storage infrastructure in Cheshire, we designed and delivered a complex consultation strategy. From landowners and tenant farmers, to elected represents and local residents, our approach catered to a varied range of stakeholders whilst making sure to comply with the statutory requirements for Development Consent Orders. Since the project’s approval we’ve continued to support the team, facilitating a Community Liaison Group and communicating plans to switch the project to hydrogen as part of the UK’s net zero journey.

Planning communications for a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel facility

Fulcrum Bioenergy has plans to develop one of the first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) facilities in the UK, at the Stanlow complex in Cheshire. The advanced low carbon fuel facility will convert non-recyclable waste into around 100 million litres of SAF per year for use by airlines operating at UK airports. We supported Fulcrum with planning communications and PR around the plans. Our activity included organising a ministerial visit from the Department of Transport, consulting on the application with local communities and managing relationships with local and regional stakeholders. We also supported Fulcrum to develop and launch a Memorandum of Understanding with Manchester Airport.

Waste & Resources

Using waste to power up regional manufacturing

Power Generation Midlands were looking to develop an innovative Energy & Resource Recovery Park in Kidderminster. Increasing plastic recycling and using non-recyclable waste to generate low carbon electricity for an adjacent aluminium foundry, the park was designed to reduce carbon emissions on the journey to net zero. We managed all aspects of the PR, stakeholder engagement activity and consultation with the surrounding community ahead of submission of the application to the council for consideration. This involved securing positive pieces in the local press and managing reputational challenges in the face of limited local opposition. Ultimately, the project was consented by Worcestershire County Council.

Launching a concept for Plastic Parks

Peel NRE developed the concept of Plastic Parks – a solution to the 4.9 million tonnes of plastic waste generated in the UK each year. The first Plastic Park is proposed at the strategic energy and resource hub Protos, which will cluster together different technologies to enable mixed recyclables and plastics to be recycled. We managed the consultation and PR around the planning application for the Plastic Park which was approved by Cheshire West Council. We also separately consulted on applications for a Plastic to Hydrogen facility and a Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) recycling facility which we both also approved.

A UK-first waste plastic to hydrogen facility

Powerhouse Energy has developed an innovative technology which uses plastic waste to generate hydrogen which could not only help to reduce our reliance on landfill but improve local air quality as a clean fuel for buses, HGVs and cars. The first plant is planned for Protos  - Peel NRE’s strategic energy and resource hub in Cheshire. We supported Powerhouse Energy and Peel NRE with all communications and engagement around the plans, which received unanimous planning consent from Cheshire West & Chester Council.

Public sector and non-profit

Championing the North West on the route to Net Zero

All eyes were on the UK as it hosted COP26, the global climate change summit. We made sure the North West got in the action, supporting the region’s combined authorities and LEPs to put on a unified front. From hosting a range of in-person events in the region and at the conference in Scotland, to elevating interest through media opportunities, we went on to help create a North West legacy in the following years. We’ve since delivered a bank of regional decarbonisation online stories to show how the North West is taking action and delivered set piece events attended by the mayors, business leaders and regional communities.

Supporting Manchester’s pioneering Embassy Village

We’re proud be part of the pro-bono team deliver pioneering plans for Embassy Village – a purpose-built community to help Manchester’s homeless and vulnerable men get back on their feet. Working with Embassy, Capital&Centric and Peel Waters, we provided free community consultation and engagement support as the proposals were worked up, and have helped raise the profile of the ambitious vision through proactive media relations. It’s been a long-running passion project for Team Font, having first supported the Embassy charity when they converted a former tour bus into much-needed accommodation and support for people when they needed it most back in 2018.

A Greater Manchester mission to tackle homelessness

This year we became official partners of the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity, having provided pro bono communications support for the past two years. Our work has focused on drawing attention to the charity’s important work and landmark ‘A Bed Every Night’ campaign. From the weird and the wonderful fundraising events (pulling a GM bus through Manchester Central anyone?) to the heartwarming stories of people going the extra mile for others, it’s been a pleasure to shine a light on work being done to address homelessness and rough sleeping in our city region.
